July/August 2007
Since most of us have enjoyed their summer holidays and have gone back to work, there is ‘news’ from the Siama house in Omaruru.
Their spring-holidays have also ended, and the children have returned to school. Hopefully they come back with a lot of energy to face the year’s end exams, especially the four girls who should finish Primary School and go to the Highschool next year.
Currently the girls are wrapped in wintercoats, sweaters, hats and gloves, because at 6.30 am it can be very cold at this time of the year. The differences in temperature can vary from -5C in the morning to 20C in the afternoon. It is really incredible how this can change in just a couple of hours. The Siama house has no central heating and the children wear coats and sweaters in the evening.
Visit
Betty and Theo, accompanied by their children and grandchildren went on holidays to Namibia in July, and paid (ofcourse) a visit to our home. The children and grandchildren were really impressed by what we have established there and how the children enjoy their lives at Siama. They could see for themselves that the girls looked well and were very happy. They played and laughed a lot. The Siamagirls equally enjoyed the visit a lot and played with the grandchildren of Betty and Theo outside. Lots of fun together!! The whole group went together (32 people) for dinner; Pizza’s at the ‘Campsite’; a new place in Omaruru. The pizza’s tasted delicious, the lemonade was tasty; it was a special event for everybody. And needless to say the girls sang a song for Betty and Theo to thank them. Siama girls are excellent singers!!!
Swimminglessons
The ‘Campsite’ also has a pool. The owner of this camping is very concerned with our children. She has offered, when the weather improves (it is winter now) 4 children can come every week for swimminglessons. What a great offer!!
Yoga-Lessons
And there are more activities to report. A Danish woman, Hanne, comes to Siama every week to give yoga-lessons to the girls. The children love it and besides giving them relaxation and concentration, it is good exercise for them. African villages do not have a lot of sports/entertainment facilities; Siama is pretty unique!!
The mats where they do their exercises on have been sponsored by a Danish Bank in Luxemburg.
Waterproject
Huray!!! The waterproject has been realised and we have our own water which makes us very happy. There is now enough water to sprinkle the garden and the vegetables. Heike, together with the gardener, will now expand the vegetable garden and grow more and different vegetables. Unfortunately the water is not drinking water yet. We need a special filter for that and we are saving hard to realise this. Hopefully soon we can drink our own tap-water.
More water
Water can be GOLD in this country, but water can also be a PLAGUE. 2003, 2004 and 2005 were very dry years; it hardly rained. However 2006 and 2007 were pouring with rain……
Almost everybody happy, except for the people from Siama.
It seemed that the roof of our house had leakage. Beds, chairs, tables had to be removed so that little buckets, pans, pots could be placed on the floor. And with the coming rainseason the problem can only become bigger. We decided to have the roof fixed, so that everybody has a dry roof above their heads. It is ofcourse a financial downside, but hopefully our sponsors will still remain good hearthed to our project.
Newest member…
The baby of our housemother Apollonia is doing well. The girl is growing fast. And since Apollonia has returned from her maternity leave, the Siamahouse runs as smooth as before.
Well, this is the end of another newsletter from Omaruru. We will soon publish the latest pictures from Betty and Theo’s visit to Omaruru (www.childrennamibie.com).
With kind regards,
Loek, Ada, Theo and Betty
