March/April 2007 Herewith the latest news from Siama in Omaruru…. Bicycles As mentioned in our previous newsletter, we received a large donation from the Danish Bank in Luxembourg, which enabled us to buy 6 bicycles. After the necessary cycling training, falling of, etc. the girls from Grade 6 and 7 are now cycling to school. Ofcourse they are wearing the helmets which were also donated. The girls are very proud and love their cycling trip. Only the road to school is literally covered with thorns and you will probably understand that they had to repair a lot of tires. But the girls learned very quickly and are now repairing their own flat tires.
We also received another professional bike from the German foundation, Namibia ProKind . It is a big one, but the eldest girls can handle it. To cover the bicycles against the bright sun, Heike and Ender built a shed. This was a donation we also received from Luxembourg. The result of their effort can be seen in the picture underneath.
We also received some additional money to buy thorn proof tires, in order to decrease the number of repairs on the tires. Vegetable Garden The work in the vegetable garden is slowly bearing fruits. As the girls were helping with sawing, they are of course satisfied to see everything grow. They learn a lot from this and love it even more to eat their own-grown vegetables. We could already harvest the peppers, next will be the gem squash, pumpkins and salad. Sport-competition Last month all children practiced hard for the sport competition which is held yearly between the schools of Omaruru. This competition comprises of running (various distances), hurdle, steeple-chase etc. One of the girls, Engenesia, did perform very well especially in running and jumping. Perhaps she will be chosen to take part in other national events. We will keep you informed ofcourse! Mozart Musical During March a group of children from Swakopmund came to Omaruru to perform a musical about Mozart. Apollonia and Heike took the girls there and even it being performed in German, the children were very excited about it! This evening also initiated the bigger girls to consult the encyclopedia Ada brought them in November and to know a bit more about Mozart so they are improving their mind! Donations We also would like to inform you of a special gift and event that took place for Siama. A school in the Buitenkaag in the Netherlands held a sponsor run for Siama during the Lent period. Not only did they run hard, it also paid well….. An amount of 2.500 euros!! Fantastic!! Children help children. Surprise Heike told us that a lady from Luxembourg has made a donation for Siama. It will remain a surprise what is going to be built from it, but we will inform you in our next newsletter. As you will understand, the project is running better every time and we are tremendous thankful to everyone for his or her donation.
