November 2009
It has been too long since you heard some news from Siama Children Namibia. Time to update you about the ins and outs of our project...
The girls are all very well, they are healthy, and none of them is suffering from the Swine Flu. They are looking forward to their holidays which start in November and will end at mid January.
If they all passed to the next grade is not known yet. They will only be informed by the start of the new schoolyear, which is in mid January. So they will have to be patient during their holidays.
This means for the elder girls (4), who are now 15 years old, that this is probably their last schoolyear. What they will do after this schoolyear, is not certain yet. Heike is looking if she can place them in a school for further education of otherwise find them a job. This will mean that they will move away from Siama to another town, as there is no further (professional) education for them in Omaruru.
Many of the girls, still have French and German lessons from Heike. Namibia is originally a German colony and many (elder) habitants still speak German. It is logical that the younger people are still able to communicate in German..
I asked Heike why French? She wrote me back that more French tourists are visiting Namibia. Since the main national income is tourism, it will be a big advantage if the girls can communicate to these guests in French. (if they, ofcourse, are going to work in Tourism). Together with their knowledge and skills with computers, the girls have a chance of a better future. Hopefully they will not get pregnant too soon, because that is another big problem in Namibia. Young, uneducated girls are getting very quickly pregnant.
We may call ourselves lucky that none of our girls got pregnant. In Namibia many girls get pregnant at young age with all the consequences.... (no work, HIV, no income...). A big praise goes to Heike and Apollonia, who day in day out, told the girls what the consquences are if they do get pregnant.....
2010 will bring Siama changes.... But the empty spaces will be quickly filled by other girls. Hundred of girls are on waiting lists to come and join.......
Within 2 weeks Betty and Theo will visit Omaruru again. They will discuss with Heike and Apollonia what the future plans can be. Will we expand the house? Will we give more children a better future, but what are the financial and operational consequences of these decisions....??
In the next newsletter, I hope to give you some more information about these decisions. It would be fantastic if we can give more children a better chance in life. And all of this thanks to your support and gifts!
As changes will come in the house next year, there are already some changes outside the house...... and what changes!! Angels do exist!!
Heike and her husband Ender received from their friends in Omaruru a swimmingpool. These friends are returning to Europe and donated their pool to the girls of Siama, so they could enjoy it!
As you can see from the pictures, it is a large pool that had to be digged into the ground. All the girls helped, under supervision of Ender, who created a stable floor and surroundings so the girls can jump into the pool with clean feet. With the help of some chlorine to keep the water clean. The temperature of the water is not something to worry about, at this time of the year it is 30 to 37 degrees!
It is a luxury and the girls are ecstatic about such a gift! Very special if somebody donated something like this to our project!
So far the latest news from our project. We thank you for all your support during the past year and hope we can count again on you in 2010.
We, Heike, Apollonia, Ender and all our girls wish you a very merry Christmas and all prosperity in the new year!
